As early adopters of emerging technologies in radiology and diagnostic imaging, our team of physicians, technologists and nurses at UofL Hospital is the region’s most experienced in nearly every specialty. From the most advanced PET scanner to a completely digital X-ray department, our radiology services department is a leader in technology.

The board-certified doctors and support staff of the UofL Hospital radiology team provide excellent and efficient inpatient and outpatient service. We work in concert with other doctors from the hospital, the University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center, and all clinics across the UofL Health Sciences Center,

The radiology services team values the University of Louisville's research and education mission, partnering with allied health training programs as a primary clinical teaching site and with physician researchers in other clinical departments to develop new methods and investigate new technologies.

Our advanced imaging services at University of Louisville Hospital are accredited by the American College of Radiology and include fully digital imaging systems for the highest resolution at the lowest radiation dose.

Body Imaging

UofL Hospital’s body imaging division performs diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound procedures along with CT and MRI of the chest, abdomen, pelvis and extremities.

  • MRA – renal, aorta, mesenteric and peripheral vasculature

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

We have 3 MRI scanners with two 3Tesla super-conducting magnet suitable for all clinical and research applications and a 1.5T open bore magnet suited for claustrophobic patients, but with image quality comparable to traditional scanners. 

UofL Hospital’s MRI department has advanced imaging capabilities that include the capability for physicians to visualize specific areas in brain function for surgical planning and treatment. 

Computed Tomography (CT) Scanning

We have state-of-the-art scanners, including the area's first dual-source CT scanner capable of head-to-toe scanning in less than 10 seconds.  All scanners are equipped with dose-reduction technology to ensure the lowest level needed per scan. We cab perform:

  • CT angiography
  • CT-guided biopsy and drainage procedures
  • Virtual endoscopy, bronchoscopy

Ultrasound

Our new and updated state-of-the-art ultrasound machines have features that utilize the latest in technology to provide the highest sensitivity and resolution, delivering consistently better images and aiding in diagnosis. We have capabilities in:

  • Interventional US
  • Vascular/duplex ultrasonography

Nuclear Medicine

We have the region's only SPECT/CT camera, which produces state-of-the art images. Precise imaging shows both function as well as specific anatomy for more accurate nuclear imaging. Other nuclear medicine equipment includes a dual-head camera for general imaging, as well as a fixed PET/CT camera for precise tumor imaging.

Vascular and Interventional Radiology

UofL Hospital offers a full range of interventional services and features state of the art biplane angiography suites and units with rotational angiography, giving physicians multiplane views of anatomical structures with less contrast and reduced radiation dose. Biplane technology provides two simultaneous views of the anatomy. Physians are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including stroke and tumor embolization.

    Interventional Neuroradiology

    Using advanced imaging technology, interventional neuroradiology (INR) can diagnose and treat many common and rare medical disorders. These procedures are generally both less costly and less traumatic for patients.

    Often, more invasive surgery can be avoided, and INR can even treat some disorders for which there exists no surgical alternative. Most patients are able to leave the hospital a day after their procedure.

    With our interventional neuroradiology capabilities, extensive expertise and knowledge of advanced techniques, we are ready to assist with a variety of procedures and conditions, including:

    • Angioplasty of brachiocephalic and intracranial arteries: Balloon catheters can be threaded up to a narrowed neck or brain artery, inflated and a stent placed, improving the blood flow and decreasing the chance of a stroke.
    • Embolization of tumors: In hypervascular tumors of the head, neck and spine, a tiny catheter can be threaded up to the arteries, supplying the lesion and different material injected to block off their blood supply. Likewise, in certain types of cancers, a high dose of chemotherapy can be given through this catheter directly to the tumor to improve the chance of cure.
    • Emergency stroke therapy: Blockage of a brain artery by a clot is a common cause of stroke that requires prompt treatment. A catheter can be placed into the blocked artery and a clot-busting drug injected to restore the circulation.
    • Embolization of intracranial aneurysms: Brain aneurysm may lead to intracranial bleeding and death. Packing the aneurysm tightly with special coils to close off its blood flow can prevent it from rupturing.
    • Embolization of vascular lesions: Brain and spinal arteriovenous malformation and dural arteriovenous fistulas can be closed with “glue” as part of a presurgical treatment or to cure the lesion.
    • Vertebroplasty: This involves injecting medical cement into a painful spine fracture to permanently stabilize it, thereby improving or relieving back pain.
    • WADA testing for seizure evaluation

    Our neuroradiology team provides a full range of services, including:

    The Breast Care Center, located at the University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center (next door to University of Louisville Hospital), provides a broad range of breast services. Staffed by experienced mammographers, nurses and technologists, our screening, diagnostic and interventional services include:
