Volunteer Information

Woman holding sign that says "please volunteer" If you are looking for a unique opportunity to serve others, and at the same time make new friends and learn new skills, consider volunteering for UofL Hospital and UofL Brown Cancer Center. We depend a great deal on our volunteers and their gift of time. As we grow and change, volunteers are needed to meet our changing environment.

You, as a volunteer, can enjoy a genuine sense of satisfaction from helping others and take pride in being actively involved in a meaningful service. Each year our volunteers contribute tens of thousands of hours helping us provide high quality care to our patients and community. They bring cheerful smiles and an unhurried pleasantness to our patients, their families, friends, our physicians and staff.

We have many opportunities which include:

  • Information Desk
  • Greeters
  • Emergency Department (pre-med students only)
  • Patient Escort Service
  • Transports
  • Surgery Waiting Areas
  • Radiology Waiting Area
  • Clerical
  • Special Projects
  • And many other opportunities

If you have a desire to help others, we have lots of options for you…whether you want to volunteer from home or give service on a weekly basis. We are always developing new programs and looking for new ways to support our customers.

If you are willing to give four hours a week, we have a position for you! We ask all of our new volunteers to give at least 30 hours of service to our organization. We allow flexible scheduling for most of our volunteers, so you can plan your service around your lifestyle.

Tuberculosis Skin Test
Everyone who wishes to volunteer must have a Mantoux 2 Step Tuberculosis Skin Test (TBT). This is given free of charge in our Health Office. If you can provide documentation of receiving a TBT Skin Test within the past 12 months, only one TBT is required. Otherwise, you will need to have the 2 Step TBT done. This is a requirement for all employees and volunteers. You need to provide a copy of your Immunization Record with proof of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine.

Criminal Records Search
This is a routine check done on all adult volunteers and team members. The amount of time it takes for us to receive the results varies. There is no charge to you for the background check.

Placement
Once the application process is completed, TB Skin Tests are completed, and background check is returned satisfactory, we will contact applicant with a schedule, sign in procedure, and Volunteer Number.

Volunteers generally serve about 4 hours a week, one or more four hour shifts, wear a uniform, a name tag and sign in-and-out each day. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask during the interview or give call us. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
